Most bus air-conditioning systems still rely on synthetic refrigerants with a global warming potential (GWP) of up to 2,088. At the same time, upcoming PFAS regulations are increasing the pressure to act.

At BUS2BUS 2026, Kuno Zeller, Head of Development as well as Steffen Colditz and Marco Pacholke from DB Regio shared insights into a pilot project that proves what is already possible in real-world operation.

Since 2025, Germany’s largest bus fleet operator has been using our e-Power Unit – enabling the use of environmentally friendly propane (R290) as a refrigerant in diesel buses for the first time. 
This milestone was made possible through strong collaboration. A generator supplied by HYDAC Group / ENGIRO GmbH delivers the required electrical power to operate an electric compressor. 
Omnibus Elektroniks & Service GmbH ensured the professional vehicle installation. We designed the propane-based air-conditioning unit with a direct refrigerant circuit without additional heat exchangers – reducing components and weight, as well as minimizing energy losses.
